Hi,
Might sound very stupid but I just wanted to check if there are other cameras out there that are compatible with Portenta. HM01B0 is good but my project is now demanding higher resolution pictures.

The latest version of the camera shield ships with the HM0360 which doubles the res.
If you are comfortable hacking the firmware I have some never released prototype shields that connect an OV5640 and PoE. They work, but, you’d need to pay $$$ for them and compile the firmware yourself.
Thanks for that! I’ll check out HM0360.
I am using the Portenta for a CV project. With increase in the resolution and limited onboard, I wonder if the Portenta will even be able to load data into buffer though.
I have never done anything like hacking the firmware, is there a guide where I can learn this from?

EDIT:
I luckily have a Portenta with HM0360. I tested it out and it looks like a pretty great upgrade and might be good enough for my project. However, it has an IR cut filter and it’s going to be tricky to remove it. I need photos clicked at night also. Do you have any advice on this? Is there a variant of HM0360 that comes without the IR filter?
I was wondering about the highest end camera compatible with Portenta. Does the firmware require it to be a Himax? Is there an option with resolution close to a Raspberry Pi Camera?
The OV5640 is 5MP. 2592x1944.
By hacking firmware I mean you need to install the build system and edit some config files. It’s not very hard, but, if you are doing this you are expected to know your way around build system tools.
As for the IR filter, it’s behind the lens which is integrated into the assembly so I don’t know how you would remove it.
Thanks for that!
Happy to give OV5640 a shot. Could you confirm if this is the right PR Add support for the OV5640 to the Arduino Portenta by kwagyeman · Pull Request #1195 · openmv/openmv · GitHub?

It’s already in the firmware but not enabled. So, you just need to change a flag from 0 to 1 and then rebuild.
You’d need the shield also I have to have hardware to get it to work.
I managed to open an HM0360 up and found out that the filter is stuck on the lens. I removed the IR filter, but in the process scratched the lens a bit.
This could work for me if I could purchase spare lens without IR filter and replace with that of HM0360. I tried looking up if parts are sold separately but could not find anything. Do you know if Himax sell lens and CMOS imager separately? Would be great help!
PS could you help me find out what the camera port/connector of Portenta is called?

Hi, the cameras are from Arducam so you may wish to contact them directly. They may potentially know all these details and have a part they can directly sell you.
I have manually counted the number of pins on HM01B0 and HM0360 to confirm they’re both 24
Same is confirmed in the datasheet on the official site
But why is it 24 for HM01B0 and 30 for HM0360 in the schematics?
I’m looking for other compatible cameras that I might be able to use instead of HM01B0/HM0360 on Portenta Vision Shield. I have posted queries about it on Arducam’s forum but have received no response so far unfortunately.

Do, you want me to send you one of my OV5640 adapter boards? PM me if so. You’ll need to buy it and pay for shipping.
Thanks for the offer, @kwagyeman; issue is my research fund is very limited, and we have already invested in over 10 of Portenta+VisionShield. The project demands replication and field deployment also, so we are keen on using commercially available options only

Just email Arducam then and see what they can do for you.
