I wonder if I could record a picture (jpg, bmp…) on the camera memory or SD so that a PC can read it from the USB.

Just reset the camera after saving the picture. The computer caches the SD card disk image and doesn’t re-read it unless the disk is remounted. It assumes disks can’t create files on their own.
